Liposuction

Most of us know how frustrating those excercise resistant fat cells on the stomach, thighs, hips and arms can be. For those who are healthy, who exercise regurlarly, but just can't seem to get rid of that extra fat--liposuction is a viable cosmetic surgery option. Liposuction improves the appearance of body areas that have concentrated amounts of visible fat.

Through a vacuum-like process, the fat is removed, creating a smoother, more attractive body contour and better self image. Various liposuction methods include the standard tumescent technique, ultrasound-assisted (UAL), and the most recent variations of liposuction including Liposelection and SmartLipo.

With all the varieties of lipo available out there, not to mention all of the non-surgical cellulite removal treatments (Mesotherapy, VelaSmooth, and Endermologie to name a few), it's hard to know where to begin. That's where a consultation with a certified liposuction surgeon comes into play. Every surgeon has his or her own favorite technique based on the results they've had with their patients, but most importantly, based on each patient's unique case. Any reputable surgeon should be able to explain their technique clearly and thoroughly enough to give you all the information you need to feel confident in your decision.

Surgical Lipo Techniques:

LipoSelection®- This form of lipo is exclusive to the Vaser System which uses ultrasonic energy to dissolve fat cells for a speedier recovery period with less discomfort. Through ultrasonic energy, LipoSelection leaves surrounding tissue, nerves and blood vessels virtually intact.

Ultrasound Assisted Lipo (UAL) -While theoretically the same technique as LipoSelection, general ultrasonic methods do not utilize the Vaser System. Fat cells are broken down and liquified through ultrasonic engergy (sound waves) that are emitted at the top of the canula.
SmartLipo™- Involves laser-assisted fat removal through a small canula with an Nd:Yag laser placed inside. SmartLipo is used to firm up localized areas of fat, while also tightening the skin. Popular places for SmartLipo include the chin, waist, upper arms, inner/outer thighs. It can also be performed without general anesthesia.
Tumescent Lipo- The oldest version of liposuction being utilized today, tumescent lipo is by no means obsolete. Many doctors still refer to it as the tried and true method of liposuction and their preference when it comes to treating the majority of their patients.
Better technology has allowed for this standard suction technique to deliver proven results with little downtime, scarring or complications; however, your results will depend on the skill and precision of your surgeon.
